Achieving a leapfrog breakthrough, firmly securing the position as the largest automobile exporting country.
According to data from the General Administration of Customs, compiled by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, China’s total automobile exports exceeded 2 million vehicles for the first time in 2021, reaching 2.015 million units, surpassing South Korea and ranking behind Japan and Germany. Among these, 310,000 new energy vehicles were exported, representing a threefold increase year-on-year. In 2022, China’s automobile exports reached 3.11 million units, marking a year-on-year increase of 54.4%, surpassing Germany to become the world’s second largest automobile exporting country. The export volume of new energy vehicles climbed to 679,000 units, representing a 1.2-fold increase year-on-year. In 2023, China’s automobile exports surpassed two million units, reaching 5.22 million vehicles, marking a year-on-year increase of 57.4%. This broke Japan’s seven-year record of being the world’s largest automobile exporting country, positioning China as the global leader. The export of new energy vehicles in China further climbed to 1.203 million units, representing a 77.6% increase year-on-year. Since the beginning of this year, China’s automobile exports have continued to maintain a strong momentum, with an export volume of 3.773 million vehicles from January to August, marking a year-on-year increase of 28.3%. Among these, the export of new energy vehicles was 818,000 units, representing a 12.6% increase year-on-year. The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers predicts that China’s automobile exports will increase by another 600,000 vehicles in 2024, building on the foundation of 2023.
